Department of History of Art

The volume has been developed from a series of seminars convened in the Department in 2013-14 in recognition of the 35th anniversary of the publication of Jean Bony’s seminal work The English Decorated Style: Gothic Architecture Transformed (1979). The book is edited by John Munns, an Affiliated Lecturer in the Department and Fellow of Magdalene College, and published by Brepols as part of their series Architectura Medii Aevi.

In ten essays, by both established and early career scholars, Decorated Revisited explores the legacy of Bony’s work, alongside subsequent developments in the discipline and emerging avenues of research in the study of the Decorated style of Gothic architecture. Other members of the Department who have contributed to the volume include Paul Binski, James Hillson, and Jana Gajdosova.

This is the first of the Department’s well established Medieval Art Seminar series to be published in its entirety in a single volume. This coming year’s seminar series will explore the theme of ‘Transmission and Communication’, and begins at 5.30 pm on Monday 9 October.
