Department of History of Art

We’re delighted to welcome art historian and 2021 History of Art alumna Alayo Akinkugbe back to Cambridge to celebrate the launch of her new book, Reframing Blackness.
In this important work, Alayo explores the presentation of Black figures in Western art, the role of museums, feminist movements, and the curriculum in shaping our understanding of Blackness in art history. Her work invites readers to reconsider dominant narratives and acknowledge the integral place of Blackness within the canon.
Alayo will introduce the book and its key themes, followed by a conversation with Dr Amy Tobin. The evening will conclude with a drinks reception and book signing.

Alayo Akinkugbe is the creator of @ablackhistoryofart, a platform dedicated to highlighting Black artists, sitters, curators and thinkers, past and present. She also hosts the podcast A Shared Gaze and holds an MA in Curating the Art Museum from The Courtauld Institute of Art.
