Department of History of Art

The Department is pleased to announce the recent publication of A Brief History of British South Asian Art, a new book by Dr Alina Khakoo published this month by Tate Books.

The book traces the development of British South Asian art from the post-war period to the present day, examining how artists of South Asian heritage have shaped and reshaped the cultural landscape of Britain. Bringing together art history, visual culture, and social context, Dr Khakoo’s study foregrounds the voices, practices, and innovations of artists whose work has frequently been marginalised within mainstream narratives of British art.

In A Brief History of British South Asian Art, Dr Khakoo explores key themes including migration and diaspora, identity and belonging, political activism, and the impact of colonial and postcolonial histories. The book situates artistic production within broader cultural and institutional frameworks, analysing exhibitions, collectives, and critical debates that have defined the field over several decades.
