The Department is very sad to have to announce the death of Professor David Watkin at the age of 77. David taught here from 1970 until his retirement in 2008 and was a Fellow of Peterhouse. The author of more than thirty significant books, some translated into several languages, he was an architectural historian of truly international standing, whose work has enriched our understanding of British eighteenth- and nineteenth-century architects and buildings in particular. He was also a tireless campaigner for the value of classical architecture, which he believed could serve the practical needs of the present day and would make society more harmonious.
A superb lecturer, David will be sorely missed by the many colleagues and students at Cambridge who enjoyed his wit, perspicacity and erudition during the course of his long and distinguished career.
