Department of History of Art

This fellowship will support work on a book provisionally titled ‘Art in the Fells: A Collection, its Maker and its Legacy’ which focuses on Helen Sutherland, an early and stalwart patron and friend of Ben Nicholson and David Jones as well as many other modernists. When Jim Ede created Kettle’s Yard in the 1950s, he admitted a debt to Sutherland’s example, in the homes she had created first at Rock Hall, near Alnwick in Northumberland, and then at Cockley Moor in the Cumbrian fells.

The Department offers Professor Spalding warm congratulations on this
award.
