Gabriel's doctorate concerned the organisation and financing of parish church building in the later Middle Ages and he will be widening the scope of this research to study patterns of authority in the late medieval and early modern parish.

His PhD was supervised by Prof. Paul Binski, with scholarships from the Lightfoot, Ellen McArther and Ochs Trusts. He completed his MA at the Courtauld Institute, where he won the Director's Prize, and his BA at Cambridge. He won the Reginald Taylor and Lord Fletcher Essay Prize in 2014.
