Graduate research seminars take place at 5.00pm each Wednesday during the Michaelmas and Lent terms in the History of Art graduate centre, 4A Trumpington Street.

This terms theme is Transcultural Contexts in Art. Transcultural visual studies are taking form as an emerging, critical field within art history, globalisation and media studies. The term originates from debates around the notion of a 'pictorial turn' (W. J. T. Mitchell,1994) as well as 'intervisuality' (e.g. Mirzoeff 2001) or 'interocularity' (Mirzoeff 2000), as well as the role of the media in migration and globalisation contexts. The role of images in the context of diverse cultural processes and historical phenomena is acknowledged yet, at the same time, it is still a marginal field within traditional approaches to art history. This new field is echoed by research on the mobility of artists, works, and ideas reflected in the theories of 'cultural transfers'

(Joyeux 2003) and 'artistic transfers' (Guillouët 2009). These approaches promise to provide theoretical frameworks to analyse the origin and creation of artworks within transcultural contexts. As a result, this seminar series seeks to fix an inquisitive eye on the context of diverse cultural processes of production, circulation and reception of artworks across a range of historical periods and geographical locales.
