Samar Faruqi is a PhD candidate supervised by Professor Jean Michel Massing. Her thesis title is Nineteenth-Century British Orientalist Paintings and the Role of the Art Market (1850-1901). Through her research she aims to demonstrate how the market played an integral role in shaping artists’ representations of other cultures. From 2010 to 2015, she was director of research at Meem Gallery, Dubai. During her time at the gallery, she edited numerous books and catalogues on modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art including monographs on Dia Azzawi and Parviz Tanavoli and Art in Iraq Today (Skira, 2011).
Samar holds an MPhil in History of Art from the University of Cambridge, and a BA Honours in History of Art from Goldsmiths, University of London.
