Research Area: Cultural production in the Soviet Caucasus

Jennifer Brewin is a PhD candidate supervised by Dr. Rosalind P. Blakesley. Her research explores the production and exhibition of art in the Soviet South Caucasus in the 1920s and 1930s, with a focus on the early Stalin period. Her research interests include all areas of Russian and Soviet art. She is particularly interested in art in the Soviet borderlands, and Russian art ‘between avant-garde and socialist realism’ (Uspensky, 2011) – the so-called second generation of the Russian and Soviet avant-garde, including the Society of Easel Painters (OST).
She received her MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art (2011), and her BA in Russian and History of Art from the University of Bristol (2008). Her research is funded by the Lander PhD Studentship at Pembroke College.
