Clare completed both her MPhil and PhD in the department. Her research focuses on the art and architecture of southern Italy in the central middle ages. Her doctoral thesis, which was funded by the AHRC, is entitled ‘Visual Culture in Norman Puglia c.1030 – 1130’ and was supervised by Professor Paul Binski. It explores the churches that were built in southeast Italy during the Norman conquest and focuses on issues of patronage, cult and cross-cultural interaction across a variety of media. She is currently working at the Warburg Institute Library and will join Birkbeck in October. At Birkbeck Clare will be teaching modules on northern European Gothic and on medieval southern Italy. The Department would like to congratulate Clare on her appointment.
