Department of History of Art

From 16–21 March 2015, the students attended site visits at six Gothic cathedrals (Paris, Chartres, Reims, Amiens, Laon, and Senlis), sixteen other Gothic churches (such as Saint-Denis, the Sainte-Chapelle, and Saint-Pierre de Montmartre), and saw countless Gothic objects in museums. Emily organised the itinerary, Dr Jeffrey Miller offered seminars on architecture, and Anya Burgon (first-year PhD student) delivered lectures on the glass of Chartres. The students also contributed on-site presentations about monuments of particular interest to them. It was incredibly stimulating and helpful for the undergraduates to examine the visual material from our course in person. We are grateful to the History of Art Department for supporting this excursion and we'd like to extend our sincere thanks to the Cambridge Society of Paris for their generous financial assistance with funding our travel.
