Professor Jean Michel Massing has published his volume in Harvard University Press’s series ‘The Image of the Black in Western Art’, edited by David Bindman and Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Professor Massing’s book, Part 2 of Volume 3 in the series, covers the period ‘From the Age of Discovery to the Age of Abolition: Europe and the World Beyond’  It focusses geographically on peoples of South America and the Mediterranean, as well as Africa, conceptually emphasizing the many ways that visual constructions of blacks mediated between Europe and a faraway African continent that was impinging ever more closely on daily life, especially in cities and ports engaged in slave trade.
