The Department would like to congratulate former PhD student, Dr Imma Ramos, on her appointment as Curator of the South Asian collection at the British Museum in London. Her appointment will commence from September 2015  and her role will be to develop, research and make the collection widely accessible, which is extensive across time and in material. 

Imma completed her BA (King's, 2010), MPhil (Pembroke, 2011) and PhD (Pembroke, 2015) in the Department, supervised by Professor Jean Michel Massing. She is a specialist in South Asian art and is broadly interested in the intermingling of the sacred and the political in visual culture. Her PhD thesis (‘The Myth of the Shakti Pithas in Colonial Bengal’) highlights the late nineteenth-century Bengali reception of a network of ancient pilgrimage sites (known as Shakti Pithas) dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sati. She is currently preparing it for publication. Her postgraduate research was funded by the Pembroke Art History Lander Scholarship and the Cambridge Home and EU Scholarship Scheme. She has published in journals including Art History (2014), The Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts (2015) and The Journal of South Asian Studies (2015) and has taught as a supervisor for two undergraduate courses: The Meaning of Art and The Display of Art. She has also contributed to The Objects of Art course, lecturing on the Fitzwilliam Museum’s collection of Rajput and Mughal Indian miniature paintings.
