Amy’s research was conducted while she was undertaking her professional placement at Holkham Hall, Norfolk, in 2012-13. It concerns the unjustly neglected role of Margaret Tufton, Countess of Leicester and widow of the Earl, Thomas Coke, in completing and furnishing Holkham Hall following the Earl’s death in 1759. Amy’s work significantly enhances our understanding of the latter part of Holkham’s 30-year journey to completion while simultaneously offering pertinent reminders of the significant influence which some women exerted over the design and implementation of 18th-century architectural schemes. Amy has recently commenced an AHRC-funded PhD in the Faculty looking more broadly at female architectural patronage in the period.
